An exploratory Writing Workshop – Turn your stories into magic

If my favorite memoirs were a recipe, the first three ingredients would by Mysticism, Magic and Mythology. These are at the heart of all great great storytelling. These essential ingredients show up in every Hero’s Journey, and they all add up to soulful personal stories that transcend the ordinary.

We spend most of our lives trying to downplay our life stories, when instead we should be looking at them through a kaleidoscope. In this class we will embrace and uncover the magic and mysticism in our life stories in a space of discovery, inspired by mythic stories and authors who have done the same.

The essential themes – fate, love, god, good versus evil, morality, jealousy, hubris and failure, are the themes that make up great stories. By turning our personal stories and allowing to expand into the realm of myth and mysticism, we invite a story that is engaging and teachable, that shows our readers our struggle and triumphs through imagery and metaphor.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”44px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1560157533483{padding-top: 35px !important;}”][vc_column_text]

Myths and mysticism are the collective story of what our lives mean, and all of us cannot survive life without meaning.

Writers have a desire and capacity to find layers of meaning inside every story, and to do this, we look back on our life with the lens that we bring from moving beyond the stories, to find the personal patterns and unique messages  –   to bring out deeper soul connections and magical creativity.

As an explorer of your life, you might see that you aren’t defined as much by your successes as you are by your failures. Failure is the growth that pushed through our backs and sprouted wings (Icarus). Great mythology was born from failure and keeps the mystics teaching through story.   While it may be difficult to relate to Greek Mythology or Old Folktales, we create our own mythology through story with similar patterns to pave the road to go deeper into the inner core of our truths through story.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”center” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” z_index=”” css=”.vc_custom_1560159260287{padding-top: 30px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1560162745214{padding-top: 40px !important;padding-right: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;padding-left: 40px !important;border-radius: 1px !important;}”]

“I have found an entire universe grows inside the stories of my life –

limitless, rich, complex.

Through story is how we become immortal,

we survive across unimaginable gulfs of space and time.”

Every Story is Steeped in Mythology

Joseph Campbell said “By looking at your life as a mythic journey, writers can fully embrace the concept that your adventures and ordeals are what bring meaning and vitality to your story.”

Story is what brings us together and builds the bridges. Embracing the magic in your life, even the magic inside the obstacles, will help you create a Soul Story that engages readers in embracing the immensity and challenges in their own lives.

Two and Three part Writing Exercises

In each class we will explore themes and include two and three part writing exercises –  making lists, creating metaphor and identifying with mythological, biblical and folkloric figures in history, as well as miracles and magic created by mythic figures.  A deeper exploration with one longer write each week, writers will be surprised by the way mysticism, magic and mythology turns the seeds of their own stories into personal mythology.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”66px”][vc_empty_space height=”88px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” z_index=””][vc_column][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

Explore Mythology through Literature

This course was inspired by my intensive research to publish my upcoming book, STORYquest, Make Your Story a Hero’s Journey, and my belief that all stories are waiting to invite the magic into them, to transcend the ordinary.  Authors who have inspired me for this course are Christopher Vogler, Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung and the many books in my personal library that speak to folk tales, classical mythology and word religions.

Literature inspiring the content of this course include Vintage Ondaatje by Michael Ondaatje, SAGA, the Best New Writings on Mythology, Awakening the Heroes Within: Twelve Archetypes to Help us Find Ourselves and Transform Our World by Carol Pearson, a Joseph Campbell Companion, Classical Mythology Images and Insights by Stephen Harris and Gloria Platzner.

“Myth makes a connection between our waking consciousness and the mystery of the universe. It gives us a map or picture of the universe and allows us to see ourselves in relationship to nature, as when we speak of Father Sky and Mother Earth. It supports and validates a certain social and moral order. The Ten Commandments being given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai is an example of this. Lastly, it helps us pass through and deal with the various stages of life from birth to death.”
